Whether you’re a makeup artist or hair stylist or simply part of the beauty industry. The importance of making the customer feel good about themselves is equally as important as them looking good when they leave.

There are so many people that go to get their hair or makeup done to help build up their confidence. To feel better about themselves when life is giving them the business. That’s where the difference between doing something that pays and doing something that you love comes into play. Those that do their job because “It pays the bills” can be good at what they do but don’t always leave the person wanting to come back. Those that do what they love don’t have to be the most talented but their customer base is loyal to a fault.

Funny thing about the service industry. The service that you give resonates more than you can see with your eyes. Have you gone shopping and had someone judge how much they think you’re going to spend before you even get to open your mouth? Same can be said for those that are over selling and clearly in it for the money. Using catch phrases like “love & sweetie” but treating you like they can’t wait to be done. You may get my money because I needed what I came in to get but you won’t get return business or the “I only came to get this but let me see what else you have while I’m here” moment.

How about the times that you set an appointment to get your makeup or hair done and you’re left waiting. In that time you’re sitting there looking at how they’re treating people some good, some bad. Either case they finish up and then come to you. All of a sudden they flip the switch. If you’re bad mouthing a person that just left to me. My expectation may be that if I don’t jump through the right hoops I’m next on the list. Flip that scenario. They loved that person to death and then come to you and you get the I’m only touching you because I have to kind of vibe. (haha) It all comes across and leaves a lasting impression.

Well, enough of the downsides. Let’s take a look at those that love what they do. That same “sweetie & love” goes from the equivalent of a guy on the corner talking to every woman that goes by to a genuine and sincere vibe. You feel more comfortable asking questions about things like products and tips. They can make suggestions on products without you raising a brow. You get in the chair or to the counter and breathe a sigh of relief. They ask about the look you’re going for and the occasion. Giving weight to your opinion and needs gives their suggestions and feedback value. It feels like it’s not just coming from an expert but someone who wants it to work out.

The “I love what I do” people remember you whether you spent $5 or $500. They look at the line of people waiting or looking aren’t sizing up who looks like they’ll spend the most or will be the easiest makeover. They see people who are there for a reason and take the time to find out and make sure that they feel like they accomplished it before they leave.

Very few love their job every second and every moment. However the difference between “It pays the bills” and “I enjoy what I do” is substantial enough that it is memorable. Which can be for the best or the worst of reasons. Choose which reason you want to be remembered for and run with it.
