Often underestimated is the search and the work that goes into finding the right products and brands for you and your clients. In some cases you can find the brand but not the right product.
Have you ever gone into a store and found shades that you never see in your area? How about the times that you find your hidden spot only to realize other did as well and they have a limited supply? You get what you can and then try to double back when you know they have it in stock again.
Makeup artist have a never ending task of trying to keep up with the latest trends but also maintaining their makeup supplies. It can be a full time job in and of itself. Which doesn't even cover the trial and error of trying out new brands and products to see if you want to include it in the makeup lines that you can offer your clients.
Choosing the right makeup for your clients is no easy task. You have to take the type of makeup that you're doing into consideration. If you're doing brides makeup you need it to last and to be beautiful not just to those attending the wedding but to the photo's and video's that will be immortalizing the event.
When putting together your portfolio you need to have a variety of looks which means the ability to work with a variety of brands and products. Self taught makeup artists pay the price in expenses vs. working at a counter. You can only try out but so many before running into problems. Add in going from counter to counter or store to store and it can be time consuming. You can't necessarily try out new products on your clients. You'll want to know any adverse effects it may have or you run the risk of losing business. Which is where friends and family come into play and that can get old pretty quickly as well.
Networking plays a big part in cutting down on the leg work of finding the right brands/products and places to find them. Those that have connections tend to save not just on time but money. Those discounts mean the world when you're out on your own and paying out of pocket. You get as much in bulk as you can without overstepping or burning a bridge by being greedy. When doing it right you'll go in and help them with their goals on the slow times by paying full price knowing it all balances out.
All of this and it doesn't even cover the tools needed from brushes, sponges, applicators etc. These are all things that you have to add into to the cost of doing business and balance out in your fees to stay afloat. You've got to be pretty savvy to be successful. Especially when you're first starting out.
When it comes down to it. It's always worth pausing to check out the makeup section when passing through a store. You never know if you're going to find that palette with colors that you've never seen in concealer or a shade that you would have to pay more for if you went straight to the counter of a department store. Do your due diligence and stay on top of where you can find the products and prices that work best for you.
End of the day you have to be just as much of a business person as you are an artist. Which is something that's great to know before setting out on your own or fresh out of school. There are some schools that cover the next steps and others that will get your certification and wish you all the best. Choosing your school is just as important as choosing the products and brands that you work with along the way.

Beauty has so many forms, and I think the most beautiful thing is confidence and loving yourself.

Makeup is no different than clothes and accessories - it's embellishments for your face. And it also gives you creative freedom. You get to have that moment in front the mirror every morning and give yourself self-love. You're making yourself up beautiful, which is essentially self-love.
Makeup is about balance. When the eye makes a statement, the lips should be quiet.
The makeup is simply an extension of the personality and colors, clothing, makeup all express something.
